VPI Avenger Turntable at Vinyl Sound Buffalo NY USA

The Avenger is the entry-level model of VPI Industries' (Cliffwood, New Jersey, USA) Avenger Series reference turntables, available at Vinyl Sound in Buffalo, NY USA. Originally conceived over a decade ago by VPI founder Harry Weisfeld before being brought to production, the Avenger establishes the reference tripod platform that underpins the Avenger Plus and Avenger Reference above it. Built around a three-layer acrylic/aluminum/acrylic bonded chassis, a 20-lb 6061 aluminum platter machined to +/- 0.001-inch accuracy, and the JMW 12-3D with VPI pure copper wire, the Avenger delivers 0.03% wow and flutter, 0.04% speed accuracy, and a rumble figure of 82 dB down in a 68-lb chassis measuring 27" x 23" x 10".

Multi-Layer Chassis and Precision Bearing

The Avenger's three-layer acrylic/aluminum/acrylic chassis uses bonded construction with damping material between each layer to suppress resonance before it reaches the bearing and platter system. Three stainless steel corner posts are integrated into the design for isolation anchoring, tonearm mounting, and mechanical grounding, with the chassis architecture supporting up to three tonearms of any make or length. The inverted bearing uses a hardened stainless steel shaft, 60-Rockwell chrome-hardened ball in a phosphor bronze bushing, and a PEEK thrust disc. Belt side-load acts at the geometric center of the bearing for zero teeter-totter effect under platter inertia.

300 RPM Motor Assembly and JMW 12-3D Tonearm

The Avenger's 300 RPM, 24-pole AC synchronous motor is installed in a separate machined aluminum and steel assembly, physically isolated from the main chassis to prevent motor vibration from coupling into the bearing and platter system. The motor pulley achieves +/- 0.0005-inch tolerance ex-factory. Tonearm equipment is the JMW 12-3D wired with VPI's pure copper wire, using a 12-inch effective length for reduced tracking angle error versus shorter arms and a unipivot bearing configuration.

Key Features

  • Three-Layer Bonded Chassis: Acrylic/aluminum/acrylic sandwich with damping layers for broadband resonance suppression across the full chassis structure.
  • 20-lb 6061 Aluminum Platter: High-mass platter machined to +/- 0.001-inch accuracy in a 39-inch circumference, providing stable rotational inertia.
  • Inverted Bearing with PEEK Thrust Disc: Hardened shaft, 60-Rockwell chrome ball, phosphor bronze bushing, with centered belt side-load eliminating teeter-totter motion.
  • JMW 12-3D with Pure Copper Wire: VPI's 12-inch tonearm in 3D-printed wand construction with pure copper internal wiring for low-loss signal transfer.
  • Three Stainless Steel Corner Posts: Simultaneous isolation anchoring, tonearm mounting, and mechanical grounding for up to three arms of any manufacture.
  • 300 RPM, 24-Pole AC Synchronous Motor: High-torque synchronous motor in a separate isolated machined aluminum and steel housing for quiet, stable operation.
  • 0.03% Wow and Flutter: Reference-grade speed stability with 82 dB down rumble, measured at factory after run-in testing.
  • Made in the USA: Designed and manufactured by VPI Industries in Cliffwood, New Jersey.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the VPI Avenger turntable?

The VPI Avenger is the entry model of VPI Industries' Avenger reference series, a belt-drive turntable featuring a three-layer acrylic/aluminum/acrylic chassis, a 20-lb 6061 aluminum platter, the JMW 12-3D tonearm with pure copper wire, and a 300 RPM 24-pole AC synchronous motor. It weighs 68 lbs, delivers 0.03% wow and flutter with 82 dB rumble, and accommodates up to three tonearms simultaneously via its stainless steel corner posts. Made in Cliffwood, New Jersey, USA.

How does the VPI Avenger compare to the Rega Planar 10?

The VPI Avenger and Rega Planar 10 represent fundamentally different engineering philosophies in high-end belt-drive turntable design. The Rega Planar 10 uses an ultra-lightweight, rigid phenolic resin sandwich plinth with a precision Neo motor and the RB3000 tonearm, optimizing for low mass and high rigidity as its noise rejection strategy. The VPI Avenger takes the opposite approach: a 68-lb high-mass chassis with bonded multi-layer damping, a 20-lb aluminum platter, and a 12-inch tonearm, using mass and inertia to resist vibration rather than rigidity and low mass. The VPI also supports three tonearms versus the Rega's single-arm architecture, and its 12-inch tonearm provides reduced tracking error compared to Rega's nine-inch RB3000.

Can the VPI Avenger be upgraded to an Avenger Plus or Avenger Reference?

The Avenger chassis can be upgraded with many of the same components found on the Avenger Plus and Avenger Reference. The Analog Drive System (ADS) is available as an aftermarket upgrade, as is the Periphery Ring Clamp and alternative tonearm choices. The core chassis, bearing, and platter are shared across the Avenger family. Contact Vinyl Sound Buffalo for a complete list of upgrade paths and pricing.
